If your body reacts positively, you can slowly increase the length of time. Essentially intermittent fasting gives the digestive system a break by fasting for 12-16 hours. I’ve also noticed the positive effects on my immune system (little to no sickness in the winter months) with taking probiotics consistently over the past several years.
Low stomach acid could be caused by really really really chronic stress, it could be caused by hypothyroidism as well. So it’s really kind of this hub, and working with people with functional or chronic gut presentations has always just fascinated me. Then there is the hydrochloric acid secretion from the stomach, and this also serves to kill unnecessary bacteria as well as help us digest our protein. This is because this is where most of the absorption of nutrients from our food occurs, and if there were a lot of bacteria lining the small intestine, it would interfere with that important function. So on this episode of the Rational Wellness Podcast, we are going to focus on low stomach acid as a cause of SIBO.
I’m sharing my own experience so you can see what my own healing journey looked like, but yours might look different. GERD is what happens when your stomach acid frequently flows back into esophagus, which is the tube connecting your mouth and stomach. But when you’re under 50 and experience reflux, it’s typically a sign of gut inflammation. What is an esophageal sphincter?” It’s a muscle that separates the esophagus from the stomach, and it can lose elasticity as you age. For a while my gut inflammation manifested as severe acid reflux, which is a symptom of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
Moderate Alcohol consumption Consumption and Oral Birth control method Pills (OCPs) Also Increase the particular Risk for SIBO
Sometimes a more broad spectrum treatment is called for to treat the bacteria and yeasts that are causing symptoms to persist. Since yeast feeds on sugars, using a high-glycemic elemental diet to treat SIBO will almost always worsen the yeast/fungal overgrowth aspect. A common scenario is to have a mixed pattern of Candida or other fungal overgrowth alongside of SIBO. Many people with SIBO either haven’t had their stool tested for parasites and yeast, or have used panels that weren’t good enough to detect them. (Especially true of d-lactate forming strains like acidophilus, which can actually aggravate pre-existing SIBO in certain people.) But some strains of probiotics are
Lactobacillus was specifically shown to reduce hydrogen levels in a breath test. Probiotics can help to create a healthy bacteria balance in the body.
But it’s a small percent of people, and yet, as practitioners, we’re fairly quick to rule that out. Very, very small percent of people, and if you have it, it’s a very big deal. But what we’re really talking about is an autoimmune connection here with low stomach acid.
One day, I’d love to run retreats in the gorgeous Rocky Mountains of Canada where I live where people with SIBO can come to relax, have all their food needs taken care of and connect with others going through the same thing and learn from SIBO experts. It can be difficult to have a health challenge but all through this, I kept feeling that “something will come from this.” I really feel guided to help other people working through SIBO but just not sure what form that will take yet.
Note that this is the diet I followed when healing my acid reflux and heartburn. If you have severe issues, I recommend getting a stool test and seeing a GI doctor to look more closely at your gut lining. So it’s really important to find a doctor or a team of doctors and work with them!
That’s why, along with killing bacteria, your treatment must aim to: If your SIBO retest is negative but you continue to experience symptoms, search for other sources of gut dysbiosis and infections. Food poisoning and infectious gastroenteritis with certain bacteria, viruses, or parasites can damage the cells that act as the pacemaker and control the MMC. And when food passes slowly, it feeds bacteria and promotes their growth. Some people can’t tolerate simple sugars like lactose and fructose while others have a hard time with complex starches like potatoes and rice.
Short bowel syndrome results in a lot of undigested carbohydrates that are known to cause small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, or SIBO, and the high levels of D-lactic acid. The report in the journal Clinical and Translational Gastroenterology appears to be the first time the connection has been made between brain fogginess, bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine, high levels of D-lactic acid in the gut and probiotic use, Rao says. Hi Laura, I’ve been sick for 4 months , discomfort in my stomach, pain under my ribs, and lately some tension in my neck left side, I don’t know if it’s related to the stomach thing or just stress, I’ve had an ultrasound on my stomach, so fat on the liver, I’m not that big 190, 5-10, but not much else, had a colonoscopy and endoscopy and they said high white cell count in the lower

SIBO can be a relapsing condition because it’s a secondary condition. Damaged intestinal lining can lead to increased intestinal permeability, otherwise known as “leaky gut”.
