Digestive system

After stumbling across an article on the web, I think this feeling I have is food fermenting in my belly. My breath is always yucky and I cannot gain any weight. I am 98 pounds. I feel like the supplements I take are not going to help me because I’m probably not absorbing them due to poor guy health.

First of all I’d like to say thank you. I appreciate the work you do and the information you provide. I started having digestive issues shortly after age 25 and I’m now 31. Never realized that low stomach acid was one of the culprits, but after testing myself and finding my dosage at four 650mg capsules, I’m feeling much much better after meals.

Doctors often prescribe medications called proton pump inhibitors to treat acid reflux, and these can cause hypochlorhydria. An individual with hypochlorhydria is unable to produce enough hydrochloric acid (HCL) in the stomach. The esophageal pH test is done to look for the presence of acid reflux, most often when the results of an upper endoscopy are normal. The procedure takes place much like an endoscopy and is usually well tolerated.

Recent studies show that in the absence of severe perturbation, the temporal variability in microbial composition of the human gut is less than the variability between individuals [6-8]. When major changes occur in healthy individuals, they often appear due to changes in the relative abundance of taxa rather than the arrival of new lineages [9]. More and more, data seem to suggest that species-specific communities in the human gut appear relatively resistant to perturbation [10-11], in large part because the acidic human stomach prevents frequent colonization of the gut by large numbers of food-borne microbes, regardless of whether they are beneficial or pathogenic.

@[email protected] I have tried apple cider vinegar, I think it’s an excellent overall tonic, and helps stomach upset too, but just not as effective as the Betaine Hcl pills. Yes absolutely!! I suffered from LPR 15 years before I myself diagnosed myself beacuase no doctor could! I know your pain. I started taking HCL Betaine with high protein meals and I try my best not to mix food groups such as carbs and protein.

Thanks, Rich. It can – but we’d suggest doing this test 2-3 times, to get a better measure of where your stomach acid levels are. While it is obvious to me that either the combination of supplements or one in particular is the reason for the onset of acid reflux and heartburn; it has been very difficult for me to determine which path to resume without further damaging my health.

Now, if you drink 1 liter of water, the pH of your stomach, which had been at 2, would increase a little more. So, there’s definitely a bit of ‘dilution’ of gastric acid, so to speak. This acid is produced by the cells present in the lining of the stomach, which produce the acid when they get a go-ahead from the feedback systems to which they’re attached.

Discuss: Can an alkaline diet cure your acid reflux?

They may recommend taking supplements or increasing dietary intake of these nutrients, especially once a person regains a regular level of stomach acid. A doctor may prescribe HCL supplements to confirm a diagnosis. If a person feels better when taking the supplements, low stomach acid is likely the cause of symptoms. Doctors measure acidity using the pH scale.

Because maintaining an acidic pH environment is costly, acidic stomachs should be present primarily in those cases where it is adaptive (or where it was adaptive in a recent ancestor). The cost of stomach acidity is twofold.

Upon conclusion of the test, you’ll have a graph showing your specific stomach response to the challenge solution. From this test, the doctor can determine if you have any forms of hypochlorhydria, hyperchlorhydria, or achlorhydria. This is the best test for all stomach acid related problems.

Also referred to as stomach acid and gastric juice, it’s basically a digestive fluid – comprising hydrochloric acid (around 5,000 – 10,000 parts per million), sodium chloride and potassium chloride – that forms inside the stomach. In the study, 12 men and 8 women with reflux symptoms who hadn’t responded to medication were put on a low-acid diet for two weeks, eliminating all foods and beverages with a pH lower than 5. The lower the pH, the higher the acidity; highly acidic foods and beverages include diet sodas (2.9 to 3.7), strawberries (3.5) and barbecue sauce (3.7). According to the study, 19 out of 20 patients improved on the low-acid diet, and 3 became completely asymptomatic. Stomach acid has long been blamed for acid reflux, heartburn and other ills.

The stomach is the place where all the stuff we eat goes to be digested. It secretes a number of juices and enzymes that help in breaking down the food we eat and providing energy in the process. That’s why an upset stomach is one of the biggest nightmares to all humans, especially those who call themselves ‘foodies’.

I have schlerderma which is a auto immune disease which as right now I only deal with the crest part of the raynaud’s in my hands and these crazy stomach issues of gas, acid reflux, pain in left rib cage either front or back, roasea, sometimes fatigue. I feel alot of time that I’ve got alot of water in my throat and holding it in my esphogus or something then it goes away or you could explain it has holding a burp for awhile and then it releases. Lately have had issues with a dull pain in left side or in the rib cage right behind that comes and goes. I had a CT scan and nothing showed all my doctor did was up my dose of prevacid.
