Esophagitis

I grew up with two parents who had constant heartburn. Dad always had antacids in his pocket and mom kept them on her nightstand. I just thought it was a thing that all adults suffered from. So when I started to suffer from heartburn in college, I didn’t think of it as something I should seek treatment for.

You may regurgitate food – this is when food comes back up soon after you swallow it. It usually starts with food like meat and bread.

Delayed gastric emptying can cause reflux into the esophagus. Upper GI series or barium swallow. This test looks at the organs of the top part of your child’s digestive system.

Reflux laryngitis is a voice disorder that results from irritation and swelling of the vocal folds due to the backflow of stomach fluids into the throat. This backflow is called laryngopharyngeal reflux (acid that reaches the level of the throat). Stomach fluids contain acids and enzymes that help digest food in the stomach, but cause problems elsewhere in the food pipe [esophagus, throat, and voice box].

Some people stop participating in social activities and call in sick a lot. Other possible problems caused by acid back-up include inflammation of the esophagus (esophagitis), throat, voice box, and airways. The best and safest way to prevent reflux from occurring is to change the things that cause reflux. Gastroesophageal reflux disease symptoms usually can be prevented by simple lifestyle modifications in diet, activity, and habits.

Baking soda can calm some episodes of heartburn by neutralizing your stomach acid. Heartburn happens when the contents of your stomach rise up into your esophagus, where stomach acids can burn the tissue. Or perhaps you have gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), a chronic condition with many potential causes.

Alcohol increases the likelihood of acid backing up from your stomach. Nonprescription antacids are only part of the treatment for GERD. They can work very well, but these antacids alone usually can’t stop the symptoms. Your health-care professional will probably recommend that you make changes

I was told to follow up with my primary care doctor and get treatment. She put me on a proton pump inhibitor and I can’t tell you how amazing it was – I took the first pill, and that night for the first time in years I didn’t have heartburn!. She told me I’d probably need to be on PPIs the rest of my life if I didn’t want the heartburn to come back.

H 2 RAs are all available by prescription and some are accessible in a lower dose non-prescription formulation. Acid erosion of tooth enamel, which a dentist will notice, can be a sign of GERD in someone who is not yet experiencing typical symptoms. Because of the association between GERD and sleep apnea, people with nighttime GERD symptoms should be screening for sleep apnea. The lifestyle changes you can make to minimize GERD include avoiding fats, onions, chocolate and alcohol.

This time the outcome has not been so good. The GI doctor I saw prescribed two different medications.

This change, called Barrett’s esophagus, increases the likelihood of certain cancers of the esophagus. Only a small percentage of people with GERD develop Barrett’s esophagus. Check your medications. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if any of the medications you take could worsen acid reflux or inflame the esophagus.

Although treatment isn’t always pleasant and might take some time to work, a lot of people find that they feel better afterwards and that their GERD is no longer such a problem. In some people it is caused by a hiatal hernia (also known as a hiatus hernia). The diaphragm is a sheet of muscle that separates the chest and abdominal cavities from each other. The food pipe passes through a small hole in the diaphragm and enters the stomach just below it. In people who have a hiatal hernia, the upper part of the stomach pushes up through the hole in the diaphragm and into the chest cavity.
