Should You Be Taking Digestive Enzymes?

Protease is produced in the stomach, pancreas, and small intestine. Most of the chemical reactions occur in the stomach and small intestine. In the stomach, pepsin is the main digestive enzyme attacking proteins. Several other pancreatic enzymes go to work when protein molecules reach the small intestine.

Stomach acid is also responsible for killing harmful bacteria from foods and neutralizing enzymes. Low gastric acid can leave the body vulnerable to a number of diseases and health complications.

Does raw food or juicing in our diet guarantee enough enzymes to meet our needs?

Digest highly resistant proline-rich peptides in gliadin fraction of gluten and casein that can lead to activation of the immune system in the gut resulting in autoimmune damage to intestinal tissue as seen in conditions like coeliac disease. In addition, gluten and casein-derived proline-rich peptides may exert opioid-like activity in the central nervous system causing sedation (i.e. post-meal drowsiness) and food addictions. Think of feeling sleepy after a carbohydrate heavy meal or even feeling addicted to bread! Further along this neurological scale gluten and casein are believed to trigger neurological symptoms encountered in children with autism spectrum disorders.

The most important factor appears to be the area of contact of nutrient with the mucosa. Therefore, it is the load of nutrient in the case of fat or protein delivered to the duodenum, rather than the concentration, which determines the magnitude of stimulation.

Unfortunately if you are suffering from leaky gut, then the systemic inflammation of your digestive tract and damage done to the microvilli along your intestinal lining, along with related conditions like Celiac disease or Crohn’s or SIBO etc, can reduce your ability to produce digestive enzymes.

I’m eating almost totally normal again, but I feel indigestion often, especially if I eat something heavy, a feeling of trapped gas, like I need to burp all the time, and I noticed that I get stomach upset if I eat fatty foods or meat too often. I’m just at a complete loss at what happened. I’ve done blood tests, stool samples, everything is normal. I just don’t feel normal ever since this virus. I’ve never had acid reflux before this, and have never had any other medical problems.

However pepsin is only activated at a temperature higher than normal body temperature. Pancreatin is a substance from the pancreas of the hog or ox containing enzymes. Pancreatin contains proteolytic enzymes (enzymes that break down protein), amylase, and lipase. This enzyme has been studied extensively for its anti-inflammatory properties. Pancreatin has been used successfully in Germany for fortifying the pancreas in a molecular way.

They come with some super digestive enzyme benefits as well. Also, because some people need more pancreatic enzymes than others, you need to bear in mind the level of each dependent on your needs.

It would be helpful to know what enzyme, specifically, you’re referring to. If you’re talking about an enzyme in plant cells, consumed as part of the diet, they will survive for some time because the cell walls do not degrade instantly.

Enzymes will not digest the lining of your mouth, stomach, or intestine. My doctoral education in the early 1980s included the first two years of medical school. I distinctly remember a lecturer in biochemistry stating that enzymes could not be taken orally due to their not withstanding the acid content of the stomach. I believed that for 15 years, until I was challenged on that thinking and looked up the actual literature.
