The esophagus is the tube that connects the throat to the stomach. Reflux means to flow back or return. Reflux happens because the lower esophageal sphincter in babies opens easily. This allows the acidic stomach juices, food, and fluids to flow back into your child’s esophagus.
Feedings every two to three hours, while your infant is awake, will often reduce the occurrence of gastric reflux. Overfeeding can increase abdominal pressure, which can lead to gastric reflux. Using nipples with smaller holes may also help by reducing the amount of air the baby takes in and therefore, how distended her abdomen becomes (which, in turn, increases reflux). Holding infants in an upright position both during feedings and for at least 30 minutes after feedings will help to reduce the amount of gastric reflux. While holding your baby, however, make sure her abdomen isn’t compressed, which could worsen reflux.
Infant GERD Symptoms – More Important Information
Some babies with regular reflux lose weight, but babies with silent reflux can gain weight normally, despite being in pain. In rare cases, liquid or other foreign matter gets into the lungs. This is called aspiration, and while it is a serious health matter, it occurs only in a minority of infants who have severe acid reflux. Aspiration occurs when instead of draining back into the esophagus, digestive liquids from the stomach divert into the trachea and travel into the main airways of the infant’s lungs and beyond.
Infants and children with GER have obvious reflux of breastmilk and/or formula following feeding. Usually, such infants do not appear to be in distress by such episodes. Silent reflux is common in infants because their sphincters are undeveloped, they have a shorter esophagus, and they lie down much of the time.
Now it’s happening all over again with my son hes 4 weeks. A Off to the doctor tomorrow to get meds. I was doubting my mommy instincts feeling bad for wanting to medicate so early till.inread this. It confirmed my feelings that he had reflux and that this is the best course. Now to wait for the meds to kick in….
If you’re bottle feeding, hold the bottle at an angle that allows the nipple to stay full of milk. This will help your baby to gulp less air. Swallowing air can increase intestinal pressure and lead to reflux. Babies are prone to reflux – be it GERD or LPR – because of a number of factors.

Please share your experience of GERD and acid reflux in baby and children. GERD implies a much different condition. Infants and children with GERD often experience distress because of their reflux even if the refluxed stomach contents are not completely ejected from the mouth. Infants and young children may lose so many calories by expulsion that growth is compromised.

Limit their time spent in things that make them uncomfortable (like the infant seat) and use seats or bouncers that position then comfortably. For us, the two things that worked best for keeping Quincy comfortable but letting me have some hands-free time were the Baby Bjorn Bouncer and the 4Moms mamaRoo (at it’s highest position setting). Other rockers, swings, bouncers that we had from my first two babies didn’t work well for Quincy. He could tolerate them for maybe 5 minutes but then he would start with the choking sounds, spitting up, and getting fussy. Oh, and he HATED getting sink baths (similar positioning as the infant car seat) but loved baths in this bath seat in the tub (which I have had since my oldest was a baby).
This is one of the most common signs of acid reflux in older children and adults, but it may be hard to recognize in infants.
