A cough caused by acid reflux often occurs at night, while lying down, or without post-nasal drip. And sometimes, GERD leads to a chronic cough, which is a cough that lasts for at least eight weeks and become so severe that it sometimes even leads to vomiting or rib fractures. Many people often mistake acid reflux for a heart attack, and that is because it can cause extreme and painful pressure in the chest that radiates to other body parts.
weeks ago that I have Barrett’s Esophagus, my mother and 4 of her sisters/brother have Barrett’s or GERD, my grandfather died of esophageal cancer. I am 63 yrs old and 8 months ago I started having problems with swallowing. I could not even drink liquids, consequently I lost over 40 lbs in a period of 4 months.
When I discover acid reflux is the cause for the throat pain I typically start the patient on either prescription proton pump inhibitors or over-the-counter proton pump inhibitors. Sometimes the medicine is enough to treat the acid reflux and sore throat problems – but in more difficult cases my patients must ascribe to new lifestyle and eating habits to find relief. Acid reflux, also known as gastroesophageal reflux (GER), is the backward flow of stomach acid into the tube that connects your throat to your stomach (esophagus). During an episode of acid reflux, you might feel a burning sensation in your chest (heartburn).

I have recently been diagnosed with GERD after suffering for a while with almost constant heartburn and a feeling of a lump in my throat. I had a barium swallow which diagnosed the acid reflux which has now been constant for almost 3 months now.
It is often not clear why. The passage between the food pipe and stomach is closed most of the time.
How you can ease heartburn and acid reflux yourself
Similarly, don’t lie down right after eating at any time of day. We don’t know the exact cause of gastroesophageal reflux disease. We do know what makes it worse, either by relaxing the lower esophageal sphincter or directly by irritating the esophagus. The stomach has a protective lining that resists damage by the acid.
When this muscle relaxes, it allows stomach acid to rise up out of the stomach and into the esophagus. Frequent heartburn may be a sign that there is constant irritation to the lining of the esophagus. Too much irritation to the esophagus for extended periods of time can lead to ulceration as well as to precancerous and cancerous changes to the esophagus. Identifying food triggers can help you eliminate or reduce heartburn.
He was shocked that I had never even mentioned it! I consider myself an educated person but that was the first time I heard that long term heartburn can be a sign of GERD, and that going too long untreated, GERD can lead to esophageal cancer. Been treated for GERD for 3 months after complaining of chest pain and burning sensation on my chest and back.
How is esophageal cancer treated?
CNN chief medical correspondent Sanjay Gupta said acid reflux usually can be easily treated. “This morning, an ear, nose and throat specialist from Fort Belvoir Medical Center conducted a fiber optic exam, under my supervision, of the President’s throat based on symptoms of sore throat over the past couple weeks. The exam revealed soft tissue swelling in the posterior throat and I, in consultation with the specialist, determined that further evaluation with a routine CT scan was prudent.
He told me I had a virus. Finally, I told him I feel silly about complaining, but I have constant headaches, stomach aches, a hard time eating and drinking, and a lack of general energy. I always had stomach aches as a child.
Liquid antacids may provide greater relief than other kinds, since they coat the stomach. Talk to your doctor about which treatments are best for you.
The most common symptoms of LPR are hoarseness, sore throat, excess mucus in the throat, persistent cough, asthma-like, symptoms (wheezing, chest tightness, and difficulty breathing), postnasal drip, sensation of a lump in the throat, difficulties swallowing, and ear pain. However, LPR presents differently in each person. Do you know what it feels like to have a 50lb weight on your chest? What it feels like when your stomach has spasms for over 30 minutes? Heart palpitations that feel like they will never stop?
Not so far off from the symptom of coughing, the symptom of nighttime choking can occur because of the back-flow of stomach acid that especially occurs while laying down. “For some people, attacks of choking and retching about an hour after going to bed may signal acid reflux,” Nazario says.
Don’t wear tight clothing around your abdomen, and avoid alcohol and tobacco. Acid reflux can be a painful problem to deal with that can result in long-term issues if not taken care of.
At age 13 I began regurgitating massive amounts of acid/ bile every morning. I went to a gastro-specialist who found gallstones and they wanted to take out my gallbladder because they thought that was causing the problem. However they said if they do take it out it may not stop the regurgitation, so what was the point?
