Questions and Answers about PPIs
They found that using a PPI for over 1 year increased the risk of a hip fracture by 44%. They also found that the risk increased further if the patients were taking the PPI a longer period of time, or at higher doses. This is probably due to impaired calcium absorption when there is less acid in the stomach.
Methods In order to characterise a site for a future malaria vaccine implementation in terms of malaria prevalence and its species distribution, two cross sectional studies were conducted in October and March corresponding to the high and low malaria transmission season, respectively, in the Banfora Health District. A total of 1203 volunteers aged from 0.5 to 45 years consented to participate in the scholarly study.
Many Americans use over-the-counter (OTC) drugs to treat minor gastrointestinal problems. In fact, OTC medications are often among the first treatments people use for symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), such as regurgitation and heartburn. It has probably been wishful thinking that the long-term use of PPIs was perfectly safe.
PPIs are usually taken under the care of a doctor to prevent acid reflux from recurring, but certain ones, like Prilosec, are available over-the-counter now. Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs). These medications, which include Prilosec, Prevacid and Nexium, block acid aid and production in healing damaged esophageal tissue, so they should be taken by people who are having more frequent, severe symptoms.

Like most medications, there are complications and side-effects. Fortunately the overall risk of long-term PPI use seems to be relatively small still. The Canadian Task Force for Preventative Health Care published recommendations for the prevention of osteoporosis in women recently. It mentioned major risk factors such as advanced age, family history of osteoporosis, early menopause, propensity to fall and minor risk factors such as being thin, smoking, excess alcohol or caffeine intake.
PPI use was identified from treatment claims and considered as a time-varying variable. Incident cholangitis was identified from hospitalisation and out-patient visit claims. There are a variety of heartburn medicines available over the counter to ease symptoms.

- Logistic regression was used to calculate odds ratios and of ADR associated with patient and treatment characteristics.
- Since adherence was a challenge for PrEP use, adherence was enhanced through the use of the MEMS Cap.
- This study aimed to characterise HBV infection in HIV-infected children in Namibia.
- In addition to their scientific excellence, the awardees made major contributions to the EDCTP objectives of clinical research capacity development in Africa and establishing research networks between North and South as well as within sub-Saharan Africa.
For example, North American men had a higher risk of KS than European men, but after adjustment for current CD4 cell counts, the KS risk was similar. Compared to non-users, participants using either PPIs or H2RAs had increased risk of MMD, pMMD, and injurious falls. It is not known if these effects are related to the individual pharmacology of each medication, reduced acid secretion, or the underlying disease state.

However, South African men also had a higher risk of KS than European men after adjustment for HIV-related factors. Besides differences in HHV-8 prevalence, other factors such as environmental exposures and malaria might play a role [28-30].

Methods We used data from the CASA project, a prospective, multisite study of a cohort of HIV-infected patients who started ART in seven urban and rural health facilities located in the Tigray. We analysed the retention in care and its associated determinants in over 1000 patients followed for two years. The main outcome measure was the retention in care rate, defined as the proportion of patients alive and receiving ART at the same health facility as at ART initiation. Kaplan-Meier method was used to estimate the probability of retention at different time points. Cox Proportional Hazards model with robust sandwich estimates to account for within health facility correlation was used to identify factors associated with retention.
