Update on treating reflux/colic

Instead, reflux medicines favor fungal microbes and detrimental bacteria such as klebsiella or clostridia. These microbes produce toxins of their own that further alter the gut’s pH. They can injure the gut wall, and circulate to your baby’s brain to alter behavior or even trigger seizures. It’s November 2017 and I’ve got a 6 week old baby boy, who has been diagnosed with reflux. It’s been a difficult few weeks.

These results were confirmed by a subsequent, larger trial at Guys Hospital in London, published in October 2001. If you are breastfeeding, sometimes the foods you eat can affect your baby’s digestive system. Some Mothers find that cutting out dairy products can help. A food diary helped me to establish that orange juice and other citrus fruits made Arthur’s reflux worse.

We tried a mix of tea (rooibos) and formula. The recipe was given to us by a nurse I think. Then I have heard from a lot of people since that taking your baby to a chiropractor helps a lot. But they need to be experienced in it for babies & colic. Hi Paige, good for you for listening to your instincts!

Thanks for the advice ladies. Will see how he goes with the Colief today and if it doesn’t help then will go back to the GP. I really dread feeds these days as it involves a lot of crying and screaming. My LO does settle better when laid across my lap on his tummy, whilst having his back stroked – maybe it is reflux.

This is safer. If you and your daughter have followed the vaccination schedule so far, this may disrupt her feeding and eliminating.

See my blog on why reflux medicine is a downward spiral for babies here, and what to do instead. Most pediatricians only know to prescribe these medicines and don’t offer other tools.

Acid reflux a crying shame for babies

This was a little baby boy who had been falling asleep beautifully on his own, and sleeping super well, who then started to cry when put down and needed several attempts to settle him. It also then became a little man who started to wake after 25-30 minutes of a nap and need several re-settles to get back to sleep. Each time he was picked up, you could hear him smacking his lips and slightly choking on the stomach acid that was obviously creeping up into his mouth. It didn’t take me long to realise that reflux was on the cards.

Dealing with colic and reflux in babies – remedies

Express a few tablespoons of breast milk into a sterilised container. Add four drops of Colief® and feed it back to the baby using a sterilised plastic spoon. Immediately start breastfeeding as normal.

1. Lay them on

It is not good practice to keep prepared formula for too long, even in a refrigerator. Yes, though the latest advice from health experts is that bottles should be prepared as and when required.
