What’s the Difference Between Acid Reflux and GERD?

Most of the time I can’t breath properly because the acid reaches up to my nose. I am constantly thinking I have some type of virus because of my sore throat, only to find, after yet another visit to my doctor, that it’s “JUST heartburn”.

The long-term effects of the implant are unknown. H2 blockers, such as cimetidine (Tagamet HB), famotidine (Pepcid AC), nizatidine (Axid AR), and ranitidine (Zantac 75), impede acid production. They are available in prescription strength and over the counter.

What Lifestyle Factors Cause Indigestion?

A heart attack may start when you’re exerting yourself – using a treadmill or having sex, for instance. It will usually be a pressure, ache or tight band of pain on the left side of your chest.

Over time that medication was changed to Nexium. Just recently I returned to the doctor as I was experiencing an increase in heartburn. I was sent for another barium swallow. I went to a different lab than the first test. However, this doesn’t mean I’m “cured” of my GERD.

What are the symptoms of acid reflux and oesophagitis?

Tube feedings. In some cases tube feedings may be recommended. Some babies with reflux have other conditions that make them tired. These include congenital heart disease or being born too early (premature). These babies often get sleepy after they eat or drink a little.

  • You don’t have to live with the discomfort of a burning stomach.
  • The other end of the tube outside your child’s body is attached to a small monitor.
  • Now most of the old symptoms are all back, and I am on the strongest meds available.
  • Hernias and gallstones, for example, usually require surgery, and the associated indigestion should resolve post-operatively.

What is heartburn?

I did notice an improvement during those months but the idea of a lifetime commitment to taking this drug bothered me so I researched other alternative ways to cope with it, which did help a little but by any means, do not prevent the GERD symptoms from occurring. Surgery is an option when medicine and lifestyle changes do not work. Surgery may also be a reasonable alternative to a lifetime of drugs and discomfort. Fundoplication, usually a specific variation called Nissen fundoplication, is the standard surgical treatment for GERD. The upper part of the stomach is wrapped around the LES to strengthen the sphincter and prevent acid reflux and to repair a hiatal hernia.

When the cause is lifestyle-related, prevention is the best way to find relief of symptoms. GERD is the back up of stomach acid into the esophagus. Stress and anxiety can affect the body and can aggravate symptoms of indigestion. The physiological stress due to anxiety and stress also affect indigestion.

If indigestion symptoms worsen, consult a health-care professional. It the underlying cause is caused entirely or partially by lifestyle, medications listed above may help reduce symptoms, but changes in lifestyle (for example, eating a healthy diet, reducing stress, and quitting smoking) will produce the best results (see prevention section below). Indigestion is a symptom of other conditions, so treatment usually depends upon the cause.
